Soda ash is one of the highest-tonnage industrial chemicals in the world, and for good reason: it lowers the melting point of silica in glassmaking, precipitates calcium hardness out of water, and provides alkalinity across dozens of processes. In drilling, it is the standard treatment for calcium contamination from cement or gypsum.
