Zonal isolation is not a property you can inspect after the fact without paying for it. The materials that go into a slurry at the bulk plant determine whether the annular barrier holds, whether gas migrates, and how long the crew waits on cement. These are the minerals we supply into that process.

Extenders & pozzolanic durability

Class F fly ash extends slurry yield and reduces the cost per sack, but the reason it earns its place is durability: the pozzolanic reaction densifies the set matrix over time, improving sulfate resistance and reducing permeability. That matters most where the cement has to survive decades of exposure.

Weighting

Barite where the slurry has to be built up to balance formation pressure. Calcium carbonate as a lighter-density weighting and filler option where full barite density is not required.

Expansion & shrinkage compensation

Cement shrinks as it sets, and a microannulus is a gas migration path. Magnesium oxide compensates by expanding as it hydrates. Reactivity is set by calcination temperature, so specifying light-burned versus hard-burned matters more here than with almost any other material we carry.

Lost circulation

Sized carbonate to bridge thief zones that would otherwise take the slurry before it reaches the top of the target interval.

Alkalinity & pH

pH control across the mixing and placement window, including in specialty and low-temperature systems.

Why the material spec matters.

Zonal isolation

The annular barrier either holds for the life of the well or it does not. Consistent extender chemistry is part of what makes a slurry design reproducible from job to job.

Gas migration

Shrinkage during set opens the microannulus that gas travels through. Expansive additives close it — but only if reactivity is what the design assumed.

Lost circulation

A thief zone that takes the slurry leaves the interval uncovered. Sized bridging material is cheaper than a remedial squeeze.

Wait on cement

WOC time is rig time. Slurry design controls it, and slurry design only works if the inputs behave the same way every batch.

Oilwell cement itself is governed by API Spec 10A, which classifies cements by depth and temperature service. We supply the mineral additives that go into the blend — the extenders, weighting material, expansive additive and bridging solids — not the cement classes themselves.
