Calcium hydroxide is one of the most versatile industrial alkalis. In drilling fluids it buffers pH and protects against cement contamination downhole; in construction it chemically stabilizes clay subgrades into a workable, load-bearing base; in water treatment it raises pH and drives coagulation and softening.
